The mission of the Committee on Family, Health and Human Services is to evaluate all government policies that impact families and children in Westchester County. The Committee will issue reports on various topics and recommend policy changes on the county, state or federal level. In addition, the Committee will examine and recommend strategies to improve delivery of services by the county’s Department of Social Services. Specific areas of interest include:

  • Domestic violence
  • Support collection
  • County handling of child sex abuse cases
  • Foster care and adoption
  • Welfare reform’s impact on Westchester’s children
  • Pediatric areawide coordinated emergency services

The Committee oversees county policies affecting the health of Westchester residents; makes recommendations to the full Board of Legislators on measures and/or initiatives that would enhance public health within the county; oversees the county’s relationship with the Westchester Health Care Corporation (formerly the Westchester County Medical Center).  Matters of interest include:

  • Studying the state of the county’s health care delivery system for the county’s minority populations and recommending any legislative actions;
  • Proposing any necessary changes in Westchester County’s managed care policies and practices;
  • Working with the county administration to determine and negotiate service needs with Westchester Health Care Corporation;
  • Reviewing the county’s response to health care emergencies (e.g., lyme disease, rubella, encephalitis outbreak, West Nile Virus);
  • Reviewing the county’s efforts to combat youth smoking;
  • Addressing the health care needs of families in general and abused spouses and children in particular;
  • Studying the issues related to healthcare insurance and recommending appropriate legislative reforms.
